REUTERS/Albert Gea

LAS VEGAS: The US-based networking company Cisco Systems said that it is looking at outcome-based private 5G networks that can either be deployed by telecom carriers or systems integrators who have evolved overtime, bringing expertise to the fore.

"We are looking at private networks as outcome driven, and then go from there. We are not selling
5G. We are trying to help people go to the future, and are trying to focus on outcomes and work backwards as a technology stack," Jonathan Davidson, executive vice president at Mass-Scale Infrastructure, Cisco told ETTelecom.

The multinational that works closely with both telecom operators and enterprises believes that captive
5G networks is a complex matter and that it requires relevant capabilities or skill sets to deploy telecom networks.

"Predominantly, it is a managed service setup through a system integrator or carrier who can not only evolve overtime but certainly those who have expertise," the
Cisco executive said.

Private networks are ones that are deployed within enterprise premises or manufacturing floors for captive usage, and are not meant for public or consumer consumption.

There is a raging battle between telecom service operators and technology providers both vying to deploy
5G private networks for enterprise customers, following recommendations from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai).

Incumbent telecom operators say that it is their expertise to deploy networks, and any move allowing non-telco entities would not only alter market dynamics, but would also hurt financial well-being of the industry.

Jio, Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) backed by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) already warned that there would be no fifth generation or 5G business case for them if spectrum is allocated to enterprises to set up
captive networks.

On the contrary, Delhi-based Broadband India Forum that represents technology companies such as Google, Microsoft and TCS said that tech firms or system integrators should be allowed to own spectrum and deploy private networks.

Last week, the Ministry of Communications (MoC), according to sources, has sent its views on the matter to the Union Cabinet, favouring system integrator (SI) model to deploy private
5G networks that, if accepted, may discourage telecom carriers who were expecting a chunk of return on investment (RoI) following spectrum purchase out of enterprise business.

"We have taken approaches in the UK and the US where spectrum is available or will become available. Even there, we still see primarily delivery of services to either a system integrator or communication service provider, and is still a complex issue even if you are putting up a Wi-Fi network," Davidson said.

The Cisco executive however said that it has been serving private 4G customers for nearly a decade now who are mostly in the mining operations, and were at the crossroads.

Davidson added that Cisco is now able to offer Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G as a service to its partners which is making huge difference to the San Jose-headquartered company.

It has also introduced 5G as a private service that can be delivered through SI partners.
