""Finance Minister Arun Jaitley delivered a major blow for crypto-currency platforms and made no mention of angel tax, but the Budget for 2018-19 has embraced technology like never before. A few key points here:

Tax sops for startups

Even non-tech startups with an annual turnover under Rs 25 crore can now avail tax exemptions in three consecutive assessment years out of seven. Startups can avail this if their date of incorporation is between 2016 and 2021.

Also, companies with a turnover of up to Rs 250 crore will pay a reduced tax rate of 25%, instead of only those with Rs 50 crore turnover. But the Finance Minister made no mention of the angel tax, which the startup sector wants scrapped.

Aadhaar for business

After Aadhaar for individuals, the government has now proposed unique identities for enterprises. The purpose is to crackdown on shell companies and ensure easier traceability of public money while increasing the ease of doing business.

There’s already a Udyog Aadhaar number for micro, small and medium enterprises meant to improve ease of doing business and promote formalisation of the sector.

Crackdown on digital monies

Bitcoin exchanges are in a fix after the government decided crypto-currencies are not legal tender and to eliminate any funding of illegal activities using digital money. That doesn’t mean the government is averse to the technology backbone enabling crypto-currency transactions—blockchain. In fact, it will explore how to use blockchain to promote its digital economy agenda.

AI and Big Tech

Emerging technology got prominent mention in the Budget. NITI Aayog will initiate a national programme on AI, and Department of Science and Technology will launch a mission to support investments in research and training in robotics, AI, digital manufacturing, big data analysis, quantum communication and internet of things. Allocation for Digital India programme has doubled to Rs 3,073 crore for 2018-19.

MSME boost for fintech

With huge data now available on micro, small and medium enterprises post demonetization and GST, the government wants fintech lending platforms to contribute to the growth of MSMEs. A finance ministry group is examining ways to create the right environment for fintech companies to grow in India. The government also wants to revamp online loan sanctioning facility for MSMEs for prompt decision-making by banks.

Tech in governance

The government is bringing technology to various aspects of governance. These include e-Vidhan to digitize the functioning of all state legislatures; a new version of the Government E-Marketplace; e-courts for universal computerization of all district and subordinate courts, and an e-Panchayats platform to provide a suite of core common applications to address various aspects of the functioning of panchayats.

Farmer-to-market

Farmers will have a new facility to sell directly to customers and bulk purchasers. Most farmers in India are small and marginal without easy access to the e-National Agriculture Market trading portal. So rural open-air bazaars will be upgraded to Gramin Agricultural Markets that will be electronically linked to e-NAM.

Tech for teachers

The government will launch a Prime Minister’s Research Fellows scheme this year that will identify 1,000 B.Tech students each year to do Ph.Ds at the IITs and the IISc.

In turn, it wants them to “voluntarily” commit a few hours every week to teaching in higher educational institutions. To upgrade skills of teachers, there’s the recently launched digital platform called DIKSHA (National Digital Infrastructure for Teachers).

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley delivered a major blow for crypto-currency platforms and made no mention of angel tax, but the Budget for 2018-19 has embraced technology like never before
["Budget 2018","startup budget","Arun Jaitley","AADHAAR","industry","Startup tax sops","technology
telecomnews/budget-2018-8-key-takeaways-for-startups-tech-companies"}}" data-authors="[" "]" data-category-name="" data-category_id="" data-date="2018-02-02" data-index="article_1">
