NEW DELHI: State-run telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has sought 70MHz of spectrum in the 3.5GHz band (3300-3670MHz) from the government, according to a report by Financial Express.

BSNL’s demand, if met by the government, could allow it to launch
5G services at a later date even though it is yet to switch on its much-awaited 4G network. Furthermore, the telco will not need to participate in the upcoming auction but will need to pay determined prices.

London-headquartered GSMA points out, “Today, a majority of commercial 5G networks rely on spectrum in the 3.5 GHz range (3.3 GHz-4.2 GHz). This momentum makes it vital that regulators assign as much contiguous 5G spectrum as possible in the range.”

This also means that the Big 3 telcos– Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and
Vodafone Idea– will be left with a smaller pool of airwaves to bid for in the 5G spectrum auction.

Also, if the demand is met, only 300MHz of spectrum will be left for private telcos. Of this, a minimum 100MHz per operator is needed for offering services in this band. However, the companies feel such “restrictions should not be placed on them”, the report said.

BSNL Chairman and MD, PK Purwar, has written a letter urging that 70MHz of mid-band spectrum should be provided to the telecom firm, the publication said, citing sources.

The Digital Communications Commission (DCC) has approved 30MHz of spectrum for BSNL in the mid-band, apart from that, spectrum in the 600MHz band and the 400MHz in the millimetere-wave (mmWave) band will also be reserved for the telco.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is expected to present BSNL’s demand before the Cabinet, which will take a final decision on this issue.

BSNL eyes to deploy 50,000 4G sites by year-end, can quickly scale to 5G: Purwar

The state-run telecom service provider has already issued a purchase order to Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to deploy as many as 6,400 4G network sites. The Mumbai-based TCS-led consortium included the state-owned Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT) which is providing an indigenously designed and developed core network.

BSNL, following a proof-of-concept (PoC) on 2100 MHz spectrum in Ambala and Chandigarh, has given an order for 6,000 sites, and another 400 to be deployed using 900 MHz airwaves.

Meanwhile, media reports suggest that the 5G spectrum auction may get delayed further due to a spat between private telcos and technology companies over spectrum for captive private wireless networks.
