State-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) may further extend its 4G trials by January 15 as the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)-led consortium has not yet demonstrated services with the 40-watt radio as per the conditions in Expression of Interest (EoI), Financial Express reported.

The TCS-led consortium which is trialing services at Chandigarh, has told BSNL that 40-watt radios will be set up at selected sites by December 20, following which trials will commence by December 23, the report said. Currently, services are being trialed with 20-watt radios.

BSNL in November had written to TCS expressing displeasure over the progress of 4G Proof of Concept (PoC) and had asked the firm to expedite the deployment of equipment in accordance with the terms of EoI.

To recall, the telecom PSU had extended the trials by two months, till December 31.

BSNL expects 4G rollout within 10 months of successful completion of trials. This means the commercial rollout of 4G services can be expected by the end of 2022.

Following the BSNL's EoI in January this year, TCS-backed consortium that included state-run Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT) and Bengaluru-based Tejas Networks, was shortlisted to supply core and radio equipment for the trial sites in a prelude to telco's ambitious 4G rollout strategy.
