In a series of announcements related to its public sector business in India, Amazon Web Services on Friday said that the government of Telangana (Telangana) was working with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to advance its Cloud Adoption Framework to improve the scale and efficiency of its citizen service delivery for its 40 million residents, which will help reduce costs by 33%.

The US firm also announced the second cohort of the
Quantum Computing Applications Lab (QCAL), in collaboration with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) with support from the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) to the Government of India, as well as Mphasis and Fractal.

The University of Delhi is also using AWS to enable the adoption of Samarth eGov—the open source, e-governance platform—across India’s universities and higher education institutions (HEIs). At present, this is being used by over 200 universities and HEIs and is expected to grow to 500 institutes by 2023.

The public sector business is an important area for AWS in India.

Pankaj Gupta, Leader – Public Sector Enterprises and Government, Healthcare, AISPL, AWS India and South Asia, said, “Cloud services help governments create a multiplier effect, from ensuring business continuity in healthcare, to improving productivity of municipal services. We look forward to helping the rest of Telangana’s departments harness the power of the cloud to deliver critical services, seamlessly connect with citizens, and respond quickly to emerging governance challenges.”

The state government is migrating information technology (IT) workloads to the cloud to accelerate its eGovernance plans, deliver faster and more reliable citizen services through its 33 departments and 289 organisations. The growing demand for digital services has increased the volume of public service operational data managed by Telangana.

“As the demand for eGovernance services grows, we can easily migrate and scale our workloads reliably and securely on AWS to help districts across Telangana respond to citizen needs faster. Looking ahead, the government of Telangana aims to double down on digital transformation, improving the citizen experience by providing faster and more reliable access to services, like property tax payments,” said Jayesh Ranjan, Principal Secretary, Industries & Commerce (I&C) and Information Technology (IT) Departments, Telangana government.

In the University of Delhi, Samarth eGov has enabled more than 1 million regular and distance learning students to participate in online examinations, helped faculty with online evaluations and grading, and awarded digitally signed blockchain-based degree certificates to more than 360,000 students over the last 24 months during the pandemic. From January through July 2022, the university processed more than 663,000 student applications.

“The education sector in India is adapting to the post-pandemic era where student expectations are rising and changing, and the engagement between students, administration, and faculty are increasingly expected to be digitally-driven,” said Rahul Sharma, Regional Head, Public Sector – AISPL, AWS India and South Asia.

“The reliability, agility, scalability, and security offered by AWS enables us to build Samarth eGov to realize our vision and confidently scale it to
empower higher education institutions and students nationwide," said Sanjeev Singh, Joint Director, University of Delhi South Campus.
