Mobile users need to brace up for another round of mobile tariff hike in the second half of this year as the industry looks to improve its average revenue per user (ARPU) to bring in more financial stability.

The Indian telecom market is ready to take another hike in its stride as telecom tariffs in India remain amongst the lowest globally, according to analysts.

After two rounds of tariff revisions, a significant pricing power in the sector has returned and it is expected that the top three telcos – Jio, Airtel and
Vodafone Idea – collectively will add around 35-40 million customers by end-FY23, mainly from the rural markets. Rural mobile tele-density is under 58% compared to over 130% in urban areas.

Another 10-12%
tariff hike and steady customer gains this fiscal will trigger around 10% on-year ARPU growth for the top three telcos by end-FY23.

The tariff hikes also assume importance, as
5G auction is expected to take place in the next few months and telcos need to spend on bidding for 5G spectrum.

However, Jio and Airtel may buy pan India 5G spectrum rather than only in urban or tier 1 cities due to competitive pressures while for
Vodafone Idea it remains unclear how it will fund 5G bids.

Vodafone Idea may bid selectively in their core 3G/4G circles. The company will be further vulnerable if it doesn’t have pan India 5G spectrum

From India perspective, 5G could be used to provide broadband offerings to homes in sparsely populated areas. BoFA said that carving out 5G networks for campus networks, sports stadiums, Virtual reality & AI use-cases could be a focus area for telcos.

Telcos are likely to roll out 5G services in urban/semi-urban areas within 3 months to 6 months of getting spectrum. The top vendors in India are well placed to help in a faster delivery.

As part of rollouts for its upcoming 5G network deployments, Jio is using drones to run a pilot around tower surveillance and upkeep as part of its plans to use the technology to survey sites and plan the next wave of tower rollouts. Jio is leveraging its stake buy in drone maker Asteria Aerospace—some three years ago—to test use cases for tower maintenance via drones to drive time and cost efficiencies. During the pilot, drones will be used to check the health of towers and Jio’s assets deployed on them.

Using drones will not only cut down time significantly, but also drive cost efficiencies. It can also reduce time to survey sites by almost 30-40%, adding that while drones won’t cost less than sending a human up a tower, the value derived would be nearly 30% higher.

In another significant development, Vodafone Idea said it is closer to tie up the roughly Rs 20,000 crore more it needs from lenders and external investors to take on rivals.

There are steady signs of Vodafone Idea’s revival, and it is running a “marathon” amid a great sense of “optimism” in the market and within the company, company’s managing director
Ravinder Takkar said. “Where we are in terms of operational efficiency, in terms of trying to not only consolidate the network, we have started to see that the brand is starting to stick, the brand metrics are improving and going in the right direction, and there's real traction in the market. Customer numbers started to stabilize… three quarters of revenue growth in a row, three quarters of ARPU growth in a row, three quarters of 4G subs growth in a row.”

In a related development, Aditya Birla Group chairman
Kumar Mangalam Birla said he is ‘absolutely committed’ to staying invested in the ailing telecom operator Vodafone Idea. “As of now, we are very committed. The intent is to find a financial partner to come and invest in the company”.

For the January-March quarter, Vodafone Idea narrowed its net loss to Rs 6544.9 crore from Rs 7234.1 crore in the previous three-month period, supported by the November tariff hikes which helped average revenue per user (ARPU) grow, and a one-time gain. Cash & cash equivalents at March end was Rs 1,460 crore. While the carrier’s overall subscriber base continued to shrink in the fourth quarter — to 243.8 million from 247.2 million in the December quarter — the number of 4G subscribers rose to 118.1 million from 117 million and ARPU grew to Rs124 from Rs115.
