The opening of Apple<\/a>'s flagship India retail store has been delayed further, with the iPhone maker aiming to debut its first company-owned outlet in the country in Mumbai in the January-March quarter next year. This is the second time the store opening date has been pushed, three senior industry executives said. The reasons are attributed in part to pandemic-related issues such as interior fitting and other supplies getting delayed due to the squeeze in shipping, they said.

The company had planned to open the 22,000 sq ft Mumbai store at
Reliance Industries Ltd<\/a>'s premium mall Jio World Drive<\/a> in August-September. Before that the original deadline was 2021. Apple is developing the store as a retail landmark in India, similar to outlets known for their design and architecture in Los Angeles, New York, Beijing, Milan and Singapore.

If all goes to plan, 2023 will mark a big India retail push by Apple, which will also be opening a company-owned outlet in New Delhi at Select Citywalk mall in Saket. The 10,000-12,000 sq ft space is currently being fitted out. The Mumbai and Delhi stores will be anchors for both the malls.

Apple India didn't respond to queries. The world's largest consumer technology firm is also negotiating with property and mall developers for more retail space in Delhi, Mumbai and other cities. Industry executives said the intent is to turn

Apple has been expanding its retail presence in India through franchisee-owned and operated outlets known as
Apple Premium Resellers<\/a>, top retail chains such as Reliance Digital<\/a>, Croma and Vijay Sales<\/a>, large neighbourhood mobile phone stores, and ecommerce platforms.

An executive who's part of retail real estate negotiations with Apple said the company takes six months to a year for fitouts. The opening of the first store has been delayed as fixtures and decor are being imported from China and Europe with shipping lines squeezed due to the pandemic, he said.

\"The company was also waiting for offline retail sales to fully recover in India before increasing the pace of the store rollout,\" he said. Most large retailers have reported offline retail sales in India surpassing pre-
Covid<\/a> levels in the April-June quarter due to the complete lifting of Covid curbs.

India has consistently been one of the best-performing markets for Apple for more than five-six years. Since the pandemic, Apple has performed at its all-time best in India as consumers preferred buying the latest
iPhones<\/a>, iPads and computers to manage work and study from home.

As per the latest regulatory disclosures, Apple India increased its revenue from operations by a five-year high of 68% in the fiscal year ended March 2021 to Rs 22,845 crore, while net profit rose 32% to Rs 1,226 crore from the previous fiscal year.
