Kolkata: Bharti Airtel’s recent move to hike floor prices of select prepaid and postpaid plans will support its average revenue per user (ARPU) growth in the medium to long term, India Ratings & Research (Ind-Ra) said.

This, according to the ratings agency, is since the Sunil Mittal-led telco is “less likely to face competition from
Reliance Jio” due to the almost similar entry-level plans in the prepaid category and the sticky nature of subscribers in the postpaid category. Airtel’s entry-level feature phone pricing plan at Rs 79 is now broadly similar to Jio’s Rs 75.

Last month, Airtel took the lead in hiking rates, raising prices of its base postpaid corporate user plans and even made its entry level prepaid plans 61% costlier, in a clear bid to boost ARPU and boost cash generation ahead of upcoming payments towards AGR dues and spectrum buys. It also dropped its Rs 749 family postpaid plan and nudged retail users to upgrade to Rs 999 plan offering more data.

Ind-Ra said “Airtel’s step of indirect tariff hikes indicates that the
industry is moving towards a higher ARPU regime”.

It added that the combination of “growing data tariffs, increasing data usage per subscriber and increasing data subscribers in the overall subscriber base over the last one year,” indicate ARPU of the telecom industry could grow even without tariffs hikes, going forward.

The ratings agency said Airtel also leads the industry with the highest reported average monthly data usage (GB). In the June quarter, Airtel reported a 12.4% sequential rise in data usage per customer to 18.93 GB, indicating that mobile users continued to use the mobile internet while working from home.

Ind-Ra however, said Airtel’s subscriber base needs to be monitored over the next three to six months.

In the just ended June quarter, Airtel lost 1,35,000 users on a net basis to end with 321.23 million users. And its total quarterly net 4G user adds also fell to 5.3 million from 13.7 million recorded in the January-March period, and 12.9 million in October-December.

Latest Trai customers data also showed that Jio added active mobile phone users in May 2021 at the cost of Airtel and
Vodafone Idea, driven by demand for the market leader’s new JioPhone offers.
