In the 5G segment, Samsung held a 23% market share, followed by Xiaomi with an 18% market share.

“5G

The overall smartphone market grew 1.6% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2022, the research firm said. It has projected shipments topping 170 million units in CY2022.

Xiaomi (24%), Samsung (19%) and

While Xiaomi suffered a 13% decline in shipments, both Samsung and Realme registered their shipments rising 7% and 40% year-on-year, respectively.

OnePlus’ shipments increased 50% year-on-year and Apple shipments recorded a 20% year-on-year growth, the research firm said, adding that the iPhone-maker topped the super-premium segment (Rs 50,000-Rs 1,00,000) with a 77% market share.

“The smartphone industry continues to face major headwinds, including prevailing supply-side dynamics, and resultant raw material shortages. While the initial two months of the quarter remain muted, March bucked the trend, with growth picking-up,” Kumari added.

Most market trackers have reported a decline in shipments in the January-March quarter due to inflationary pressures and supply-side issues.

IDC has said India’s smartphone shipments declined for the third consecutive quarter in 1Q22, dropping 5% year-on-year. Strategy Analytics and Counterpoint Research have reported that India’s smartphone market declined 3% and 1%, respectively, in the first quarter of 2022.

“Going forward in Q2 2022, CMR estimates point to a potential 5-8% YoY growth in smartphone shipments. We anticipate H2 2022 to potentially see some easing of supply-side constraints. Consumer demand at the premium smartphone end will continue to remain robust, with demand remaining muted at the affordable end of the market,” Kumari said.

In Q1, the overall feature phone segment declined 43% year-on-year, due to supply-side constraints, increase in operator tariff plans as well as rising inflationary trends. The 2G feature phone and 4G feature phone segments declined by 42% and 50% year-on-year, respectively, CMR said.

Itel Mobile, Lava and Samsung took top three positions in the feature phone market with a 23%, 22% and 15% market share, respectively, as per CMR. But all brands suffered an annual decline in their shipments.
