Rahul Vatts, Chief Regulatory Officer, Bharti Airtel, P. Balaji, Chief Regulatory and Corporate Affairs Officer, Vodafone Idea, SP Kochhar, director-general, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), and T.R. Dua, director-general, Digital Infrastructure Providers Association (DIPA), participate in a panel discussion moderated by Mansi Taneja, Associate Editor, ETTelecom on World Telecom Day 2022.

NEW DELHI: Telecom players have urged the government to come out with policies and regulations which will enable reduction in huge network deployment costs of next generation technology 5G besides helping them serve customers better.

“5G networks require higher capex and investments as compared to 4G. We are heading towards industrialization, digitization of our business sectors in the future. To keep up pace with these, you require policies and regulations which actually help you not only to serve the customers better but also to reduce costs going ahead and facilitate the network deployments. And most importantly, make it less risky for the investments to continue to pour in,” Rahul Vatts, Chief Regulatory Officer,
Bharti Airtel, said during a panel discussion on the occasion of World Telecom Day organised by ETTelecom.

With telecom reforms announced last year, the government has already shown willingness to create an enabling environment for the industry, but issues like adequate backhaul spectrum, GST credit and resolution of legacy litigations still need to be addressed, he said.

P. Balaji, Chief Regulatory and Corporate Affairs Officer,
Vodafone Idea, said, “As we enter the 5G era, in the coming quarters and years to come, more needs to be done in terms of investment, the number of sites and street furniture that will be required for densification of networks."

“Government is very aligned, in terms of knowing what they want… And we are quite hopeful that they will continue to do more and more reforms to help the situation get better,” Balaji said.

SP Kochhar, director-general,
Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), also noted that it should be ensured that existing telecom operators generate profit to offer cost-effective services. “The government must realize that input-output costs have to be matched right now… the tariff is sensitive both to the government and operators. No one tinkers with tariffs too much if the input cost can be reduced and that is what we've been harping on with the government to reduce the input tax and improve liquidity.”

We are still only half done in terms of broadband connectivity, we have 700 million broadband internet users, half a billion more to be done. And that means even more investment required in taking 4G even further, Balaji said.

Talking about the potential in 5G offerings, Vatts said the big areas for significant revenue growth in 5G will be the enterprise segments and private dedicated networks. “There's a huge opportunity for telcos here to address traditional connectivity needs, and come out with more digitized versions of connectivity for your specific needs of the enterprises.”

T.R. Dua, director-general,
Digital Infrastructure Providers Association (DIPA) highlighted that telecom infrastructure plays an important role in driving new networks and technologies. “Infrastructure plays an extremely important role and is an important part of the ecosystem. Whether you take any network, every new technology, or every trend that comes has to be accommodated and supported by the digital infrastructure that has played a pivotal role in the unhindered growth of the industry”.

“The pandemic on the flip side has brought many opportunities for us, this digitalization, which has happened, probably would have taken a pretty long time, if this was not there,” Dua said.

Covid provided the opportunity as we digitalized overnight, whether in the area of governance or in the area of the startup ecosystem, or adoption of digital services. “It has really provided a stupendous growth opportunity and has therefore allowed the telecom sector to take it to the next level. Industry has done its bit in terms of providing seamless connectivity and great services for enterprises and consumers. Also, it allowed operators to start to think about gigabit society, how do we make sure that we are ready for the next paradigm shift, which will happen when 5G comes in later in this year, Balaji said.
