Open RAN (radio access networks) technology has the potential to change the dynamics of the telecom industry but it is unlikely to become a game changer anytime soon.

Open RAN is touted as a promising technology as it gives the telecom operators flexibility to choose from multiple vendors and software providers allowing them to reduce capex/opex costs and offer innovative solutions.

Radio access networks (RAN), the basic building block of a telecom network, alone account for up to 70% of a telco's capex making Open RAN a big bet for telecom players.

It has been a prominent part of global
5G conversations since the last few years but has not evolved to become a mainstream technology owing to multiple challenges.

Traditionally, RAN has been based on proprietary technologies of global players such as
Ericsson, Nokia, Huawei and ZTE etc. Players like Mavenir, NEC are betting big on Open RAN.

There are around 35 active open RAN deployments across the globe, many of which involve MNOs testing open RAN in greenfield, rural, and emerging markets. According to research firm Dell’Oro Group,
Open RAN will see better than expected growth and is now projected to account for 6-10% of the RAN market in 2023.

Indian telecom players have been working towards Open RAN. The largest telecom player
Reliance Jio is testing its own 5G Open RAN solutions in several cities. Airtel is conducting trials for 4G and 5G Open RAN solutions on select sites in Haryana, and the solution will be commercially deployed across several locations in India over the next few quarters. Airtel and Facebook-owned Meta have recently announced that they will jointly work to increase the operational efficiency of Open RAN. Airtel has been a member of the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) Open RAN project group along with Meta.

Vodafone Idea has also done trials for Open RAN and will deploy it if the technology becomes mature enough. Though, it is yet to announce any plan for 5G launch while the other two players have launched 5G services in selected cities.

Open RAN will be a critical part of 5G. But,
there are multitude challenges in the road to implementation of Open RAN with issues ranging from operations and maintenance services to latency to network security. One of the biggest challenges in implementing Open RAN technology comes with the security aspect. With multiple vendors/providers, security of a telecom network becomes paramount. It will also pose a challenge for security agencies if Open RAN leads to diffused responsibility for network elements.

The talks on Open RAN started way back in February 2018 when the O RAN Alliance was first founded by AT&T, China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, NTT Docomo and Orange. Airtel and Reliance Jio have been elected members of the Alliance while Vodafone Global is part of it.

With much left to be proven with Open RAN, the telecom industry will see simultaneous deployment of both networks in the short term with traditional ones dominating the pie.

Open RAN is still in its infancy and it may take three to five years for the technology to fully mature and see wide scale adoption.

Traditionally, RAN has been based on proprietary technologies of global players such as Ericsson, Nokia, Huawei and ZTE etc. Players like Mavenir, NEC are betting big on Open RAN.
["Open RAN","reliance jio","telecom equipment","Mavenir","NEC","Bharti Airtel","5G","Nokia","Ericsson","open radio access network
telecomnews/telecom-diary-will-open-ran-live-up-to-its-promise"}}" data-authors="[" mansi taneja"]" data-category-name="" data-category_id="" data-date="2022-12-10" data-index="article_1">
