""MUMBAI: The 2300 MHz (4G) band — which was once seen as less usable and a bad investment — has turned out to be one of the biggest draws at the ongoing spectrum auctions.

In the bids so far, the high frequency band is one of two most contested as it is seen as providing capacity in congested areas at a fraction of the cost of lower airwaves. Two slots of 10 MHz are on offer in 16 circles in this band this time, after two sets of 20 MHz were sold in 2010 across the 22 service areas.

“Like Bharti and Jio, Idea and Vodafone will want to consolidate and become pan-India 4G operators, (and) they will need to consolidate the same spectrum footprint,” said B K Syngal, telecom expert at Dua Consulting.

The 2010 bidding in this band marked entry of Reliance Industries in telecom, as Reliance became the only operator to have
4G spectrum across the nation.

However, in five years that followed, Jio established that one could not launch a network in this band alone. There were two reasons. First, airwaves were not powerful enough to carry through walls and needed too many towers to broadcast; second, there were not many mobile devices that could use the spectrum, limiting number of potential customers. Six years later, however, experts say Jio's deployment in the band has prepared vendors on how best to place signalling stations, and network planners now have on-ground experience on how to use 2300 MHz as a complement to lower
4G spectrum.

Companies can get a quick deployment in the high frequency, as the handset ecosystem has also evolved with over 1,600 devices available globally, said industry experts. “While operators perceived 2300 MHz band as a poor investment by RJio for last 4-5 years, now the operators’ view of spectrum in this band appears to have taken a significant shift and it’s emerging as key spectrum for data,”
Credit Suisse said in a note after auction day I on Saturday.

“Indeed, Bharti recently acquired spectrum in this band from Aircel – reinforcing this view.” On Saturday, 2300 MHz saw 1.7% increase in price over its reserve price, with Gujarat seeing the highest price increase of 12.2%, followed by Maharashtra and Kerala, with 6.6% increases each.

The band drew bids worth Rs 15,390 crore, which was close to one-third of the total bid value of Rs 53,531crore on day one. Vodafone and Idea are believed to be the main players in this band, with both looking to beef up their 4G bandwidth holdings to match Bharti and Jio’s pan-India holdings.

In February, ET had reported that operators, primarily Vodafone India, are having a change of heart on 2300 MHz as a frequency for 4G service. “Technology has evolved, one of them is carrier aggregation which gives you greater speed and capacity. One could not do that earlier,” Sunil Sood, chief executive at Vodafone, had said at the time. For years before that, the company had maintained that the spectrum was squarely inadequate and that 4G itself was a little while away.

Idea Cellular’s chief Himanshu Kapania too had said in April the device ecosystem had boomed much faster than operators had foreseen.

Hemant Joshi, partner at Deloitte Haskins and Sells, said the future of 4G will be in service quality and for that spectrum will be required in abundance.

The 2010 bidding in this band marked entry of Reliance Industries in telecom, as Reliance became the only operator to have 4G spectrum across the nation.
["Credit Suisse","Dua Consulting","B K Syngal","4G spectrum","spectrumauction2016","3G/4G","Voda2016
telecomnews/telecom-companies-vie-for-2300-mhz-band"}}" data-authors="[" deepali gupta"]" data-category-name="" data-category_id="" data-date="2016-10-05" data-index="article_1">
