NEW DELHI: Bharti Airtel said that it is in touch with its enterprise and government customers to ensure business continuity, and has ramped up its network remotely to add capacity to handle data surge, which has not stabilised. In an interaction with ET’s Danish Khan, Airtel chief technology officer Randeep Sekhon that the telco’s network is in good shape. Edited excerpts

How has been traffic on
Airtel's network since lockdown?

Traffic has increased but it is now more stable or new normal. It kept increasing but it is stable for the last week. It is well spread traffic than peaky traffic in busy hours. The traffic has also spread geographically. Urban areas are seeing less traffic growth compared to suburban and rural areas. We saw mass migration o population which probably has spread our traffic across India. The increased traffic is being seen in rural India compared to urban.

We are now in a new normal. We are prepared for another increase in case there is, but we are not seeing that happening now.

At what level Airtel’s network capacity is being used?

We have seen an increase in network capacity utilisation in most of the place, but now we have added extra capacity and rebalanced the network and there's no capacity stress anywhere.

We have done planning for radio, core and transport and what kind of things we would need.

How are you serving your fixed-line broadband customers?

There is a lot of demand for fixed-line, but we are able to service only where we are very sure about safety and security and society permits. Also, if a corporation is in a dire need or there is a government official who needs it, there we do it given we have fiber availability at the doorstep.

Fiber comes with dedicated capacity. And, we are now running at very reasonable utilisation ensuring smooth connection.

How are you managing your data centers?

As a precaution, we are keeping some technicians at data centers since a data center outage would have a bigger impact on networks.

Has OTT players’ move to reduce video quality helped?

They have helped by converting the video bitrate to Standard Definition (SD). Now, people are able to watch more videos without exhausting their daily quota. This helps both telcos to manage their traffic and users to manage their daily quota. It's a win-win for both. We don't see any disruption in the essential part of the internet.

How is Airtel prepared to manage the traffic shift to rural area?

Airtel is very well equipped to take rural. We already have a rural strategy in place which resulted in sufficient rural capacity. Additionally, we had shut down our 3G network, which made more capacity available and it has come in handy after the traffic increase.

Rural is generally less utilized compared to urban. We are in very good shape.

Gopal Vittal talked about network investments recently. What’s being done?

We are conscious of the safety and security of field forces. Everything is being done at the backend. We are ramping up radio capacity using software uprgadation. On the core side, we are using very advanced cloud installations to help support our traffic and launch soft capacity. Our traffic increased beyond what we had forecasted for Q1, but we quickly deployed technologies and we are in good shape now.

Do you get approvals in time for site maintenance?

We are managing a majority of the cases remotely so that we don't have to move to the field unless it is very urgent. We issue proper ids engineers for physical maintenance or for spare part change. There are government curfews and movement passes as well. We have set up a war room to support them in case they are stopped and respective authorities are not updated. Everybody realizes the importance of telecom.

We have provided all safety kits to our engineers.

How are you supporting your enterprise and government customers?

We invoked our Business Continuity Planning (BCP) mode and are working remotely. Our NOC centers are empty and are being run through a secure multiple-factor authentication log-ins.

When it comes to supporting corporate India, we are able to seamlessly able to support them remotely. Same for BFSI, entertainment and media companies. There were some customers who needed faster broadband or bigger pipes for enterprise location or at homes. We did software-based expansion for them. We are in very close touch with corporate India. When it comes to government, at every state level, we are in touch with them for business continuity and for enforcement.

We are also supporting the government's Arogya App and for tracking COVID-19 patients. We are doing everything as an
industry effort.

Is there a need to invoke ICR agreements with other telcos?

We had tested ICR agreements, but we don't see a need to invoke it right now because we don't see networks going down. In Orissa, for Fani cyclone, we invoked ICR and then all 4 telcos used each other's network. We are ready with the system if need be, I am in touch with my counterparts.

Any final comment...

My son is in the UK and my mother is in Punjab, I don't feel safe if I don't call them every day. Imagine if it was not possible, then I would be very anxious in these times. We know that telecom is an essential service. We are taking an approach to connect the nation rather than being just a commercial venture.

Airtel
