Ericsson CEO Börje Ekholm.

NEW DELHI: India is likely to have the strongest digital infrastructure outside of China which will drive the digitalization of the country, said a top executive of Swedish telecom equipment maker Ericsson.

Borje Ekholm, CEO of Ericsson in an earnings call with analysts said that the
5G cycle has just started, with less than a quarter of global LTE nodes having been upgraded to 5G mid-band. He added that mid-band frequencies are crucial to fully realizing the potential and performance of a “true 5G network”.

“I would say this shows that there is still a lot of growth potential in the market. I'll just pick one example, India, where we will see a rapid build-out of mid-band Massive MIMO. India will likely have the strongest digital infrastructure outside of China, which will drive digitalization of India,” said Ekholm.

“Combined this with the new use cases for 5G, both for enterprises, but also for consumers and that includes, for example, fixed wireless access, we see that the demand for network performance and network infrastructure will continue to be at a high level,” he noted.

Ericsson reported a 13% adjusted year-on-year growth in its sales to 7.9 billion SEK in South East Asia, Oceania, and India market in the quarter that ended September 30, compared to 6.5 billion SEK in the same quarter a year ago.

Ekholm revealed that since 2017, Ericsson has increased its Radio Access Network (RAN) market share from 33% to 39% (excluding mainland China).

In the just-ended quarter, Ericsson and its Finnish rival Nokia have bagged 5G gear deals from India’s top two telcos
Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel.

Airtel has signed multi-year 5G equipment contracts worth $2.5 billion or more than Rs 19,750 crore with the two European vendors cumulatively getting 90% of the value, while South Korean Samsung has received the balance. Jio, on the other hand, has not disclosed contract details.

ET had first reported on the likelihood of Jio and Airtel deals on July 27.

Out of the 22 circles, Ericsson will deploy 5G networks for Bharti Airtel in 11 circles, including Delhi, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu, Nokia in nine circles, including Mumbai, and Samsung in two circles, Punjab and Kolkata. All three contracts are for deployments of 5G radio access network gear.

In India’s first 5G spectrum sale, Jio and Airtel, acquired airwaves in low-band, mid-band (3300MHz), and high-band for Rs 88,078 crore and Rs 43,084 crore, respectively. By contrast, cash-strapped Vodafone Idea bought spectrum in 3300MHz and 26GHz bands for Rs 18,799 crore.

Commenting on use cases that will be driven by fifth-generation networks, the chief executive said that commercial fixed wireless (FWA) is getting traction, especially in North America.

“But we also see what other operators around the world are doing, like in India,” he added. Notably, Jio is eyeing 100 million households through its FWA solution, JioAirFiber, that will use the telco’s 5G standalone (SA) network.

“So we see that as a completely untapped revenue pool today will be captured by building out the 5G network, both in mid-band, but also in millimeter wave in order to capture that. We think that has massive potential. I think the other, where we're starting to see emerging use cases, for example, is the connectivity, simple connectivity to an enterprise where in the 4G world, it was typically fixed access,” he said.

Ericsson sees use cases within factories using private networks or dedicated networks, such as for self-driving cars, factory automation, and others. “And you're already starting to see that market shaping up quite substantially,” Ekholm said.

The top Ericsson executive said the company’s acquisition of Vonage will help it serve the needs for collaboration software, extended reality (XR) and virtual reality (VR).

“I think we will start to see those emerge in one, two, three years as networks really get fully developed, that's when you start to see the benefit of 5G in society,” he added.

JioBharti Airtel
