Khalid Wani, senior director of sales, India, Western Digital.

Storage solutions provider Western Digital is betting big on the content creation economy in India and it has launched SanDisk Professional brand to drive growth for its storage products. In an interview with ET’s Danish Khan, Khalid Wani, senior director of sales, India talked about the new trends and 5G’s impact on India’s content creation economy. He expects the new brand to become of the fastest growing business for the company. Edited excerpts.

Why is the company introducing the
SanDisk Professional brand in India?

It is a multibillion-dollar market opportunity. If you look at just India alone, the market has close to 150,000 odd content creators now that are monetizing the content that they create. And these content creators are operating in multiple segments such as travel, tourism, fashion, healthcare, education and automobile among others.

The need for storage for content creators is completely different from what an average ordinary consumer. They need a product that helps them transfer content fast from their primary
devices and store or even upload them. So that is one of the use cases.

We have found that on average a content creator would be creating anywhere between 350 to 400 gigs of data a month. Compare that to a Bollywood movie. An average Bollywood movie would require anywhere between 300 to 400 terabytes of data. Their data needs are different. Because they are monetizing the content, they also want to make sure that their content is backed-up safely.

Thus, SanDisk professional was a much-needed segment play that caters to this need. We have a wide product portfolio that cater to the needs of all kinds of content creators.

How do you see
5G helping the creators segment?

5G adoption is going to be a major growth driver for this economy. 5G will accelerate content creation. And specially when the creators are monetizing, they want to make sure they are saving their data safely.

Every trend point towards good potential. The fact that there are segments that see high adoption are early-stage segments in the country. If you see an example of how gaming as a segment has evolved. It has become a creator segment by itself. They are monetizing content and using multiple platforms to do that. This has also given rise to local streaming companies that are engaging with consumers.

We see travel and tourism content creators and influencers doing phenomenally. That's going to be a major growth driver. There are more segments such as education which are growing.

How big is the business opportunity for SanDisk in India, in the content creation segment?

India is one of the fastest growing markets for us. Even in the context of content creators we see great opportunity especially as more and more creators are monetizing today.

Do you plan to engage with content creators so that you can make them aware of your products?

Oh, absolutely. We have a program, wherein we engage on a global level with content creators. And that is exactly what we're doing here as well. We work with a lot of content creators. Our teams are engaging with them regularly to understand what they need, hear them and get insights into what kind of products they need. And then we innovate products that cater to this need.

The benefits that we have here in India is that we operate a massive research and development facility out of the country. We have engineering teams based here, which helps us to basically get a lot of feedback from these content creators.

What is your go-to-market strategy?

So, in the content creation space, it's important to make sure that we tap all the channel segments that we have. Mostly our IT channel, which is our traditional IT channel, which engages a lot with these content creators, and then our professional channel, which is your media and broadcasting channel. We have our own WD store in Mumbai. It’s located in Andheri, very close to 300 to 400 production houses. And these production houses are catered through those kinds of channels.

Apart from media and entertainment channels, online is also an area wherein we do see a lot of prosumers who have high engagement and activity with their data, using the online channel in order to procure the product. So, from IT channel to media and broadcast channel, and all the way to the online channel, we are using all these segments in order to make sure that we are in front of our customers.

How is the adoption of high-end smartphones driving the content creation as a market?

You'll find a lot of these 150,000 content creators that I talked about, using their point and shoot
devices, which are high end smartphones. And that's where our one terabyte Micro SD cards become the go to product for those people. That's actually helping a lot from the overall content creation perspective.

Any last concluding comments?

Innovation. We talked a lot about one terabyte. That one terabyte was actually designed and conceptualized in India by our engineering teams. So that's a major achievement. We got a lot of very strong engineering footprint.
