Mumbai: Reliance Jio Infocomm reported a 65% jump in net profit for the January-March period, its sixth straight profitable quarter, boosted by strong user additions and data consumption.

Sequentially,
net profit grew 1%, constrained by a continuing fall in average revenue per user (ARPU) and higher costs, which weighed on operating margins. Earnings had increased 22% sequentially in the October-December period.

Profit rose to Rs 840 crore in the fourth quarter of the financial year from Rs 510 crore a year earlier, the Mukesh Ambani-owned telco said in a statement on Thursday.

Operating revenue rose 56% on year and 7% sequentially to Rs 11,106 crore, backed by a net addition of 26.6 million subscribers, monthly average data usage of 10.9 GB and voice consumption of 823 minutes. The mobile phone operator is playing a key role in helping parent company Reliance Industries transit from an oil-and-retail conglomerate to a technology platform company.

Jio ended the quarter with 306.7 million users, closing in on its rivals. Vodafone Idea had over 409 million subscribers at the end of February, while Bharti Airtel had over 340 million.

“Growth in data and voice traffic at this scale has been unparalleled…
Jio 4G LTE network would soon cover every district, taluk, gram panchayat and village of India with targeted population coverage of 99%,” Mukesh D Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries, said in the statement. “Jio mobility services along with Gigafiber fixed-broadband services and associated technology platforms have been designed to transform India with the power of Digital Revolution and reinvent Reliance as a technology platform company.”

The telco, which upended the market since its entry in September 2016 with cheap mobile internet services, saw ARPU, a key performance parameter, fall for the fifth straight quarter – to Rs 126.2 from Rs 131.7 in the previous quarter – as Jio added lower revenue-generating subscribers in smaller towns and cities through its 4G feature phone, JioPhone.

“Jio is adding more subscribers, many of them are opting for the Rs 99 pack. So the telco is bound to have lower profits and lower ARPU,” said investment advisor S P Tulsian. “Jio is adding subscribers, while rivals are seeing a fall in customer addition. In this
industry’s current situation, Jio is meeting expectations.”

Besides the impact of JioPhone, ARPU has been hurt by fewer days in the quarter – 90 and not 92, Anshuman Thakur, Jio’s strategy head, told reporters.

Its Ebitda (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation) margin fell 5 basis points on quarter to 39%, with total expenses rising almost 8% on quarter, mainly on the back of higher network operating costs, finance expenses, and depreciation and amortisation charges.

Thakur expects margins to improve as higher capacity utilisation leads to more revenue.

Jio demerged its tower and fibre assets in the just-ended quarter, which helped the company reduce liabilities of about Rs 1,07,000 crore from the balance sheet, said Thakur. He added that after the demerger, Jio’s net debt stood at Rs 67,000 crore.

“All assets and liabilities of the Optic Fibre Cable Undertaking have been derecognised at their respective carrying values with the net differential amount of Rs 501 crore on such de-recognition being debited to the retained earnings,” Jio said.

Jio spent Rs 20,000 crore to expand and deepen its 4G network to cater to surging data demand, having recorded 9.56 billion GB of wireless data traffic.

Thakur downplayed concerns over network congestion, saying it was restricted to a few pockets. “We are de-bottling those areas. This is a priority for us,” he said.
