Ericsson<\/a>, in its November edition of the Mobility Report released on Wednesday, projected 5G<\/a> subscriptions to reach 690 million by the end of 2028 – representing 53% of the total mobile subscriptions in the India, Nepal and Bhutan region at the end of 2028.

The telecom gear maker, Finnish Nokia, and South Korea’s Samsung have won 5G radio access network (RAN) deals from both Jio and Airtel, Both telcos have started rolling out the networks, beginning with key metro cities and plan to cover the entire nation with 5G by 2023 and 2024, respectively.

Ericsson expects
enhanced mobile broadband<\/a> (eMBB) to be the main use case for 5G initially.

In contrast, Ericsson said that global
5G subscriptions<\/a> grew by 110 million during the third quarter to around 870 million, and it remains on track to top 1 billion by the end of 2022 while globally, it will reach 5 billion by the end of 2028 – accounting for 55% of all mobile subscriptions.

On the other hand, the company expects 4G subscriptions to peak at around 930 million in India in 2024 after which it will decline to 570 million by 2028.

“Total mobile subscriptions in India are estimated to grow to 1.3 billion in 2028,” it added.

The total mobile data traffic in the India region is estimated to grow from 18 EB per month in 2022 to 53 EB per month in 2028, growing at a CAGR of 19%.
